It Begins with Seeing

If someone were to ask me how I got where I am today, I would not have a direct answer. I have always been drawn to paintings and letter forms. Images inspire me -- whether they be colors that shadows cast at different times of the day or logos on the sides of trucks. As a child, I remember buying Canada Mints because I liked the box, not necessarily the candy. Design is all about what you see and how it makes you feel.

Education: Traditional or Otherwise

I graduated from RISD, Illustration having been my course of study. Post graduation, I lived and worked out of a second story flat on the east side of Providence (hence the name Second Story Graphics). Despite countless “just-pay-the-bills” part-time jobs as waitress, bartender, short-order cook, wall paper hanger and even realtor, I always managed to squeeze in a free-lance illustration job here and there. Drawing pictures was great fun, and as I met more and more people with marketing needs for the products or services they offered, it became apparent that type and letter forms were essential.

Computer Design?:

Before computers, design was all about setting type in galleys, matte knifes, paste-ups with rubber cement, pica rulers, and cutting rubylith for color separations. Learning desktop design was inevitable. Few designer could afford the $6000+ required for a small computer rig. In the “way back” Kinkos was the only establishment that rented computers ($20/hour)--so began my self-study in computer design. This self-study lead to my first freelance job with The Third Wave newspaper followed by a long stint in print shops as a typesetter.
